Armchair Travelogues: Arizona Memorial Spaces: Anthem!

Film

In a community known primarily for tract homes and outlet malls, the outstanding aspect of this area in the far reaches of northern Phoenix is the Anthem Veteran’s Memorial. It was dedicated in 2011, ten years after the horrendous terrorist attacks on our nation during September 11, 2001 that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.

A May, 2020 view of the Veteran’s Memorial in Anthem, Arizona with a bright, cheerful garden.

The memorial is comprised of five pillars in descending sizes, each representing a branch of the United States military. The design makes it one of the most unique memorials to our veterans in America, and the plaque pictured below describes what occurs on this site every Veteran’s Day at exactly 11:11 AM.

The pillars are majestic, standing in mute testimony to the hundreds of thousands who have sacrificed their lives from all branches of the military – in the many wars that have occurred and involved the United States during the 245 years since the birth of our nation. Veteran’s Day will be especially poignant in 2021 as this year marks a full twenty from the beginning of our nation’s longest war in 2001 to its conclusion barely a week ago.
