Recently after Easter services I was making my weekly tour through the gallery and saw a wonderful piece of mixed media called “Belize Dreams” by Laurie Fagen. Once again, I was able to learn about another artist I was totally unaware of before. Although most of her works displayed here involved intriguing creations with textiles, I definitely like “Belize Dreams” the best. According to the information plaque, Fagen states: “I enjoy playing with many different surface design techniques for original one-of-kind wall art.

“Belize Dream” certainly fits that description as it incorporates a number of different materials to enchanting effect. Fagen has added a bit of whimsy with artificial leaves, what appears to be acrylic for the sun, sea shells, shards of porcelain, wood, and paints. The raised leaves to the left, the sun, and toucan bird stand out among the soft blue of the sea giving the impression of tropical delights not to be missed. The delicate blue and purple of the flowers bring to mind beguiling fragrances and the desire to snooze in a hammock under shady palms with sweet tropical dreams!
Another creation that impressed me was by the other featured artist this week, Nicole McCaigue. Many of her works are related to images from nature she enjoyed during child from varying geographic locations. She is inspired by those explorations from places as diverse as the forests of Northern Arizona to the beaches of Southern California. My favorite piece from McCaigue is “Night Owl” for the mesmerizing blend of colors that harmonize it so pleasingly.

She describes herself as a dreamer and this strongly influences the art she creates because it “creates a place of wonder and joy that takes from the reality of the world around me to a place of freedom”. I couldn’t agree with that sentiment more!
