Armchair Travelogues: Arizona Historic Places: Carefree & Cave Creek!

Uncategorized
Gorgeous, sunny ☀️ day welcomes you to Carefree.

Cave Creek is one of many small, offbeat Arizona towns with a distinct, rustic charm all its own. Originally settled by U.S. soldiers in the 1870s, it was also the scene of a mini gold rush. Today it’s recognized for numerous, more lasting treasures such as the gorgeous, expansive Sonoran Desert surrounding it, the nearby Tonto National Forest, abundant and varied wildlife, along lots of outdoor activities such as hiking and horseback riding to engage the visitor.

Both Cave Creek and Carefree (next door) also offer a variety of great places to eat, galleries to see and specialty shops catering to unique tastes. Many of the these shops are located within the “Frontier Town” complex in the center of Cave Creek with an array of apparel choices, gifts, toys, home decor, and gourmet foods. One of the most unique stores is the Cave Creek Olive 🫒 Oil Company which has thirty-five plus oils to choose from along with balsamic vinegars, pasta and other goodies!

Of course, there is a pleasing range of indoor/outdoor dining options in the area, and one of the best is Big Earl’s Greasy Eats offering some of the tastiest burgers 🍔 in the Phoenix area along with rich, scrumptious shakes! Also, there is The Horny Toad Restaurant which takes pride as the oldest original restaurant in Cave Creek and serves some of the best fried chicken to be found anywhere. Altogether there are over 20 restaurants in the area to please every palate including BBQ, Italian, and Mexican cuisine.

While Cave Creek definitely represents the old west by appearance, Cave Creek is more like the new west with its more contemporary styles of architecture. It was one of the first planned communities in the state beginning in 1955. Yet, both towns contrast and harmonize well together in their magnificent desert 🏜 setting, offering a pleasant afternoon or weekend excursion for visitors who enjoy wide, open spaces – getting away from the noise, traffic and pollution of Phoenix.

Both Cave Creek and Carefree offer special events such as the Carefree Art & Wine 🍷 Festival in November, Cave Creek Wicked – Halloween 🎃 Theme (a costumed bar crawl through town!) There is also the Cave Creek Rodeo Parade and Cave Creek Rodeo Days each year in March. This fascinating sundial in downtown Carefree was constructed in 1959 and is of steel-frame construction, encased in anodized copper. When first built, it served as a clever conduit to absorb solar energy, which in turn was used to create hot water 💦 to heat a nearby office block through connecting copper tubes. The sundial rises 35 ft. above the plaza and extends 62 ft. across it.
